Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content usable and citable by systems that generate answers rather than list links. It differs from classic SEO in what it rewards: a direct answer near the top, specific claims with sources, visible dates and authors, and original data that no other page offers. It covers a citability audit of priority pages, rewrites that put the claim first, a plan for original elements, and monthly tracking of which sampled prompts cite your pages.

The problem

Why do pages rank but never get cited?

Generated answers cite a handful of sources for each question. Ranking gets a page retrieved, but being quoted is a separate step, and the system needs a passage it can lift and defend. Pages that are vague, unsourced or buried in marketing language rarely offer one, however well they rank.

We rework priority pages so each claim is clear, sourced and structured for retrieval, and we add the original elements that make a page worth citing.

  • Ranking but not cited

Pages rank well in Google yet never appear as sources in generated answers.

  • Vague claims

Statements with no numbers, dates or sources, which systems can't verify or quote.

  • Nothing original

Content that restates what every competitor says, so there is no reason to cite it.

  • Buried answers

The direct answer sits under three paragraphs of introduction.

What makes a page citable

The traits we work towards are the ones Google’s guidance on AI features and our own sampled checks keep pointing at: a direct answer near the top, specific claims with sources, visible dates and authors, and something original. None of this is a trick; it is what a careful reader would want too.

Where it sits in the method

Generative engine optimization lives in the Trust, Retrieve and Cite stages of the Crawl-to-Citation Method. Access and Understand are checked first, because citation fails when they do. For how GEO relates to SEO and AEO, and which one a given symptom needs, read SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

How we approach it

In method order, from trust to citation.

We find which pages are cited and why, then make claims explicit and sourced. Each step ends with a check we can show you.

See the full method
  1. Audit citability

    Cite

Compare cited and uncited pages on structure, evidence, freshness and clarity.

  2. Rewrite priority pages

    Retrieve

One clear answer per section, claims with sources, dates visible, authors named.

  3. Add original elements

    Trust

Plan and publish the data or analysis competitors can't copy.

  4. Track citations

    Cite

Sampled prompts, run on schedule, with citation URLs recorded.

What you get

Deliverables your editors can act on.

Every rewrite states the claim, the source and the passage an answer can lift.

  • Citability audit

Which pages are cited, which aren't, and the likely reasons

  • Rewrites with answer-first passages, explicit claims and linked sources

  • Original-element plan

First-party data, surveys, benchmarks or tools worth citing

  • Structured data that matches the visible content

  • Monthly citation report on the sampled prompt set

What this is designed to change

  • Pages that generated answers can quote accurately
  • A growing set of first-party sources that others reference
  • Clear reporting on which pages are cited and for what

How we measure it

How do you know citability improved?

We record a baseline on a fixed prompt set before any change, then re-run the same prompts on the same engines afterwards.

  • Citation rate on sampled prompts

Source: Sampled AI prompts across named engines

  • Pages with sourced claims (share of priority set)

    Source: Citability audit, re-run

  • Referring domains to original content

Source: Backlink index and server logs

  • AI-referral sessions

    Source: Analytics

Each result states the baseline, the time window and what we can't attribute to our work.

Generative Engine Optimization questions

Straight answers to what buyers ask us most.

Still have questions? Book a call

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. If a page can't be crawled and understood, it won't be cited. GEO adds the evidence, structure and originality that generated answers favour.

Does structured data help with citations?

It helps systems understand a page; it is not a citation switch. We only add structured data that matches what is visible on the page.

How is GEO different from AEO?

AEO makes sure each question buyers ask has a page whose first lines answer it. GEO works on the evidence inside that answer: specific claims, named sources, visible dates and something original. The two overlap, and many engagements combine them.

How many pages do you rework?

The pages are chosen from the prompts that matter to your pipeline, starting with those most likely to be retrieved and cited.
