Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of researching the questions your buyers ask and building pages that answer each one first, specifically and with a source, so featured snippets, AI Overviews and AI assistants can lift a clear, correct answer. It differs from GEO in where it starts: AEO begins with the question map and page structure, GEO with the evidence and originality of the content. It covers question research, answer-first templates, rewrites of priority sections and a fact sheet that keeps prices, limits and features consistent across pages.

The problem

Why do buyer questions go unanswered on your site?

Buyers ask specific questions — about pricing, integrations, compliance, comparisons — and the answers on your site are missing, scattered or wrapped in marketing copy that no engine can lift.

We research the questions, design answer-first pages and sections, and check that engines actually return your answer.

  • Questions without pages

Sales hears the same questions weekly; the site never answers them directly.

  • Answers hidden in PDFs

Key facts live in decks and documents crawlers can't use.

  • Featured snippets lost

Competitors hold the answer boxes for your category questions.

  • Inconsistent facts

Pricing, limits and features differ between pages, so engines pick the wrong one.

Answer first, then detail

An answer-first section opens with the question as a heading, gives the direct answer in one or two sentences, then adds evidence and context. Readers get what they came for; engines get a passage they can lift.

Where it sits in the method

Answer engine optimization lives in the Understand and Retrieve stages of the Crawl-to-Citation Method. For how AEO relates to SEO and GEO, read SEO vs AEO vs GEO.

How we approach it

In method order, from understanding to retrieval.

We find the questions first, then design pages that answer them directly. Each step ends with a check we can show you.

See the full method
  1. Research the questions

    Understand

Sales calls, support tickets, search data and assistant prompts, de-duplicated and prioritised.

  2. Design the answers

    Retrieve

One question per section, answer in the first sentences, evidence and detail below.

  3. Fix inconsistencies

    Understand

A single source of facts, referenced by every page that mentions them.

  4. Track answers

    Retrieve

Sampled queries across Google and assistants, with the returned answer and source recorded.

What you get

Deliverables your content team can act on.

Every question is mapped to the page that should answer it, with the answer first and its source stated.

  • Question map

Buyer questions grouped by stage and intent, with the page that should answer each

  • Answer-first templates for FAQ, comparison and how-to pages

  • Rewrites of priority sections so the answer is first, specific and sourced

  • Fact sheet to keep pricing, limits and features consistent across pages

  • Monthly tracking of which questions return your answer

What this is designed to change

  • Direct, correct answers to buyer questions on your own pages
  • More answer boxes and assistant answers sourced from your site
  • Fewer support and sales questions caused by missing information

How we measure it

How do you know the answers are being used?

We record which questions return your answer before any change, then track the same questions from the same sources afterwards.

  • Priority questions with an answer-first page

    Source: Question map review

  • Featured snippet and AI Overview appearances (Search Console)

    Source: Google Search Console

  • Sampled assistant answers sourced from your site

Source: Sampled AI prompts across named engines

  • Accuracy of returned answers

Source: Sampled AI prompts, scored against the fact sheet

Is AEO just FAQ pages?

No. FAQ pages help, but most answers belong on the product, pricing or comparison page where the question arises. We design for that.

Should we add FAQ schema?

Google now shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative sites, so we don't add FAQPage markup. Visible, well-structured answers are what matters.

How is AEO different from GEO?

AEO is about coverage and structure: a page for each question that matters, with the answer in the first sentence. GEO is about whether that answer is worth quoting: specific, sourced, dated and original. The two overlap, and many engagements combine them.

How do you know which questions matter?

From your sales and support teams first, then search and assistant data. Questions tied to pipeline come first.
