Documented user agent
Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko; compatible; PerplexityBot/1.0; +https://perplexity.ai/perplexitybot)Match on the token PerplexityBot rather than the whole string, since the version number inside the string can change. A user agent alone can be forged, so verify it as shown below.
robots.txt rules
To block it everywhere:
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Disallow: /To allow it explicitly, for example when a broader rule blocks other agents:
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /What blocking it changes
Perplexity says PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in its search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Blocking it is a search decision, not a training one.
- Perplexity says robots.txt changes can take up to 24 hours to take effect.
- Its IP ranges are updated regularly; Perplexity advises fetching them on a schedule and automating firewall updates.
How to verify a request is genuine
