Documented user agent

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_10_1) AppleWebKit/600.2.5 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/8.0.2 Safari/600.2.5 (Amazonbot/0.1; +https://developer.amazon.com/support/amazonbot)

Match on the token Amazonbot rather than the whole string, since the version number inside the string can change. A user agent alone can be forged, so verify it as shown below.

robots.txt rules

To block it everywhere:

User-agent: Amazonbot
Disallow: /

To allow it explicitly, for example when a broader rule blocks other agents:

User-agent: Amazonbot
Allow: /

What blocking it changes

Amazon says Amazonbot is used to improve its products and services and may be used to train Amazon AI models; it respects the Robots Exclusion Protocol.

  • Amazon’s agents use a cached robots.txt for up to 30 days and do not support Crawl-delay.
  • Amazon documents two related agents: Amzn-SearchBot (search experiences including Alexa; not used for generative AI training) and Amzn-User (user-initiated fetches, which may not follow all robots.txt directives).

How to verify a request is genuine

Match the requesting IP against the addresses Amazon publishes for each agent on its Amazonbot page. Source: Amazon: Amazonbot and published IP addresses.
